NPR on Sarah Palin’s faith

Check out this link to some audio from NPR concerning the issue of Sarah Palin’s faith. I don’t have much of an opinion on Sarah Palin, and I don’t endorse her or McCain, just for the record. And I think this audio does show that Christians are too quick to immediately jump on the bandwagon when there is a professing evangelical conservative on the ticket. Our Southern Baptist compadre in the clip is borderline defensive.

Christians, be wise. Don’t go around running your mouths about candidates like Palin being some kind of answer to all of America’s problems just because she’s a boisterous evangelical. Don’t doubt for a second that politics is politics, and this gal is a politician like the rest of them. She’s playing the game.

That said, I don’t know much about her, and I don’t know whether she and McCain (funny how it seems like their roles are reversed on the ticket now) will get my vote in the end. We should pray for her and her family, as we should for Obama and his.

Don’t get so hyped about a politician, people. Get hyped about Jesus, and go into all the world and bring some good news about him.

  1. Hey Zach, just checking out your thoughts on Palin. I’m just excited about her because she has a surplus in her state with the budget. I didn’t know if she was a Christian or not, and really don’t care. I would just like to see a bit of wisdom in the white house. She seems to be a bit on the authentic side of life. Doesn’t mean once Washington gets their hands are her, that things will be any different. However any women or man that can figure out how to manage the momey they have to work with gets my vote. She seems to look out for the people in her state, ruffling feathers to do what is right.

  2. Hi Michele! Those are good points, and well taken. You have to know that my posts reflect all sorts of moods and perspectives, sometimes changing as regularly as the weather. So it’s good to get feedback! Hope you and your family are doing well…

  3. Yeah, I wasn’t worked up from your thoughts. I just like to talk about stuff like this. I like dialogue. Reading people’s thoughts and sharing mine whether same or different. It’s just fun.

  4. Cool, I think I am kinda the same way :).

One of my political rules is to stay away from the extremes…there’s always the extreme conservative/republican element that thinks small government, big military, and family values is the answer to all our problems. They get in such a tizzy whenever the new conservative comes down the pike - especially if he/she is a bit more religious than the last one, or a bit more conservative - and they go nuts in adoration and enthusiasm. Then on the other side you have the same fervor over universal healthcare, antiwar doctrine, and social liberation, and the same kind of idolatrous response to the newest messianic candidate, like Mr. Obama.

But I think Christians especially need to be careful. It is way more important for us to send the message to the world that Caesar is not lord. Jesus is Lord. This was the rallying cry of the early church against the messianic Roman state, and in some ways, the world needs to hear that same rallying cry from us today.

I wonder how many more would come to Jesus if Christians didn’t just use him as a mascot or slogan in their political campaign agendas.

  5. I believe it is important to remember which kingdom we belong to, being the Lords. There is nothing wrong with voting for those we believe will preserve our freedoms we enjoy in this country. However at the same time when we pray His kingdom come you don’t know what that means for this country. Sometimes things have to get rough in order to see there is a need for a Savior. This country is a bit too big and fat. No needs, all under control, etc… Maybe in order for people in this country to come to Christ their lives need to be shaken up and we don’t know what that looks like. Look and China and the underground church there. Christians are growing but look at what they went through to get there. Anyways. Finally got around to reading your response. Cheers.

  6. Great points, thanks Michelle.
