Burlington Emergency Shelter

The Burlington Emergency Shelter is a Christian ministry to the homeless in our city. This is from the front page of their site:

OUR MISSION

The Burlington Emergency Shelter has a three fold mission:

  1. To provide temporary shelter, food and other services to all men and women in need who come to us professing a willingness to help themselves.
  2. To help these individuals become productive members of society.
  3. To demonstrate God’s love so that people in need might find hope and peace within our doors.

Our shelter is located at 89 North St. in Burlington, VT. Our Intake hours are from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and guests must speak with our Operations Manager prior to spending the night. The shelter operates from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. every day and our office is open from 8:00a.m. - 4:00p.m. Monday through Friday.

Our group has chosen to support the BES as our main outreach to local homeless folks. In addition to its function as a shelter for people without a place to sleep, the BES has an awesome program for reintegrating guys into society, especially guys who are coming out of prison. The Good Neighbor program, as it’s called, provides these guys with shelter and food, helps them get full-time jobs, gives them a fair amount of freedom and responsibility, and entails a full-fledged discipleship/spiritual instruction program. Men must enter into a contract when they start the program, and all of them do so with a prior desire to commit their new post-incarceration lives to Christ.

All in all, it’s an awesome ministry. There are opportunities to get involved on several different levels, from preparing meals to visiting the guests to donating much needed items and/or money. If you’re interested in getting involved, here’s some contact info:
